A nuanced and deeply personal portrait of master educator Robert Reich, The Last Class follows him as he teaches his final course while reflecting on a period of immense personal and global transformation. While Reich is widely known for his public service, most notably as former Secretary of Labor, as well as for his best-selling books and viral social media posts, he has always considered teaching his true calling. After over 40 years and an extraordinary 40,000 students, he is now preparing for his last class. Over the course of the film, Reich confronts the impending finality of this chapter and his own aging with increasing candor, introspection, and, ultimately, emotion. He reveals a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics, he uses his class, “Wealth and Poverty,” to offer a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s and why this poses dangerous risks to society. One thousand students fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus, attending the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that the world has to stay the way it is. His belief in the next generation’s ability to take on this fight is inspiring. The Last Class is a love letter to education.

The Class (2005) by Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook challenges the viewer’s personal sense of morality and tolerance by depicting a classroom from hell. In the video, a woman, dressed in black with a white over shirt, stands in front of a long blackboard. The classroom’s rear walls and floor are covered in taut white fabric, given the room the sinister appearance of a sanitarium or a crime scene. Six bodies lay across the floor on silver morgue trays, their features all but obscured by gently draped white sheets. The woman at the front of the class begins to lecture to the lifeless bodies with a clear and calm diction. As she turns to address the rear wall, she grabs the chalk and writes her topic on the blackboard: death. She then proceeds with her monologue, discussing how death is addressed and approached from various historical, cultural, and philosophical perspectives. She occasionally addresses the lifeless bodies, imploring them to share their own perspectives and experiences. She continues to speak, undeterred by the lack of response or reciprocity. Deliberately absurdist in its premise, Rasdjarmrearnsook’s video parodies pedagogical conventions, and the metaphor here of the corpse-as-student plays off humorous tropes of being literally “bored to death.” But in opening a conversation about death – which is often considered too taboo to casually discuss in many cultures (and particularly in the West) – Rasdjarmrearnsook also questions how we treat conversations around mortality in public discourse and how those dialogues, while vital, all too often fall upon deaf ears until it is too late.

Located in Winnipeg’s downtown core, Gordon Bell High School is probably the most culturally varied school in the city. In an effort to build bridges of friendship and belonging across cultures and histories, teacher Marc Kuly initiated an after-school storytelling project. The catalyst for this cross-cultural interaction was the students’ reading of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, a memoir of Beah’s horrific time as a child soldier in Sierra Leone’s civil war. These voluntary after-school meetings take dramatic turns and reach their climax when Ishmael Beah and professional storyteller Laura Simms travel from New York to work with them. With their help the students learn to listen to each other and find the commonality that so long eluded them.
